BOISE, Idaho — Four more Ada County residents were confirmed Tuesday to have contracted the mpox virus, according to the Central District Health Department (CDH) in Boise.
CDH said three of the four residents have not recently traveled and they are working with the patients to identify and notify those they have come into contact with. The first confirmed cases of mpox in Ada County were reported Nov. 2.
Also, as KTVB reported Tuesday, Canyon County has confirmed its first case.
“To reduce the likelihood of more mpox in the Valley, people can cover any new bumps or sores before prolonged contact with others, use condoms during intimate activities, and get vaccinated if they haven’t already,” said Central District Health Staff Epidemiologist Sarah Wright. “Anyone who has symptoms they think might be mpox should contact a healthcare provider to get tested.”
The mpox virus, which was previously called monkeypox, usually creates a rash that looks like blisters and pimples that form all over the body or in certain places, the CDH said. It can accompanied by flu-like symptoms such as a sore throat, runny nose, cough, fever, chills, fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, headache and tiredness.
The virus can spread with direct contact with someone who is infected and “very rarely, touching things like bedding or towels contaminated with the virus,” they said.
The CDH recommends that those exposed to mpox should get the vaccine within four to 14 days after exposure and watch for symptoms 21 days afterward.
“Vaccine may be given in the skin of the forearm, upper back, or shoulder, or under the skin on the back of the arm,” the CDH said.
