Bumble’s new Deception Detector tool uses machine learning and AI to automatically weeds out fake profiles even before members see them.
After smartphones and PCs, artificial intelligence is all set to play a role in your love life. On Safer Internet Day, dating platform Bumble yesterday announced a new feature called ‘Deception Detector’ that uses AI to identify fake profiles.
Bumble says the new feature is designed to take action against spam, scam and fake profiles even before members see them. The company also claimed that in just two months since its use, the number of fake profiles reported by members saw a 45 per cent reduction.

According to research done by Bumble, almost half of women (46 per cent) who were surveyed said they were anxious if the people they matched with were real or not. The research also revealed that fake profiles and the risk of scams were top concerns in India, with 29 per cent of respondents saying they wanted to keep their personal data safe.
Built using a machine learning-based model, Bumble claims Deception Detector was able to block up to 95 per cent of such accounts. It looks like the company’s AI-powered feature is used in conjunction with human support to offer a safer online dating experience. However, it did not share details on how its Deception Detector works.
Last year, a 35-year-old PhD scholar who worked at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-IMTech reported she lost a total of Rs 98,500 when she came in touch with an individual on Bumble.
In the last few months, Bumble has added a bunch of new features like Private Detector, which uses AI to detect and blur nude images and an AI-powered conversation starter for Bumble For Friends.
