One year ago, Airstream introduced the 2023 REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp 16X, and now, it’s growing—both the collaboration and the size of the trailer. Based on the 20-foot Basecamp travel trailer rather than the 16-footer, the 2024 Airstream REI Special Edition Basecamp 20X off-grid travel trailer packs all of the original special edition’s fun features into an expanded, roomier floorplan.
Whereas the 2023 REI Basecamp 16X starts at $52,900, the 20X special edition starts at $62,400. We’re not talking adventure van amounts of money, but that’s a still quite an investment. We did mention it’s an Airstream, right? And if you’ve been to REI, you know it’s best not look at price tags. Combine the two, and a premium price tag comes at no surprise. On the upside, you can probably tow the 16X (3,500-pound GVWR) or 20X (4,300-pound GVWR) with the truck or SUV in your driveway.
The price tag includes the Basecamp’s off-road oriented X-Package, which adds a 3-inch lift for more ground clearance, meaty Goodyear all-terrain tires, and stainless-steel protection to guard the pretty front end from rock chips. Even if you never hit the dirt, the X-Package looks aggressive and is completely befitting for a sporty, nimble Airstream like the Basecamp.
The larger interior of the REI Special Edition Airstream Basecamp 20X allows for more placement of the special New Spruce accent décor, a pleasing, soft green that reminds us of Airstream and REI’s commitment to sustainably sourced and recycled materials. For example, the cutting board sink cover is made from recycled paper. It sleeps up to four (not two, like the 16x) thanks to a front convertible dinette (with an awesome panoramic view) rather than a front kitchen.
An L-track storage system on the floor and walls allows for secure storage of recreational gear that enters through the Basecamp’s signature rear hatch door. Netted overhead storage adds more flexible storage.
One cool additional feature of the 20X is a rear floor storage compartment with a drain plug, which means it can be used as a built-in floor cooler. The 20X also features larger, separate heated holding tanks: 23-gallon fresh water tank, 28-gallon gray water tank, and 21-gallon black water tank.
Like the shorter version, the 2024 REI Special Edition Airstream Basecamp 20X includes a perfectly stowable 25-piece REI Co-Op + Airstream Basecamp product kit for an elevated camping experience and of course, the Airstream + REI logo’d entrance mat returns.
