Asian Games: Second Saudi runner banned for doping at Hangzhou

Saudi Arabian middle distance runner Wesam Nasser A Alfarsi has been provisionally banned after testing positive for darbepoetin at the Asian Games.

A Alfarsi, who finished last of 12 runners in the 3,000m steeplechase last Sunday, became the second Saudi runner, and the sixth athlete overall, to be banned at the Games.

The International Testing Agency, which is running doping tests at the Games, said A Alfarsi had been given an out-of-competition test on Sept. 29.

Darbepoetin is a blood-booster similar to erythropoietin (EPO).

Saudi distance runner Yousef Mohammed Alasiri was also banned for testing positive to darbepoetin earlier in the Games.

Tejan Tejenov, who took silver in the men’s +90kg kuresh event, became the first Hangzhou medallist to banned for doping on Thursday.

Asian Games 2023:: “Good chance for India to win Olympic gold again”

The Indian hockey team playing in the Asian Games is one of the best the country has had in many years and there is a good chance of winning an Olympic gold medal again, the legendary Zafar Iqbal said here.

The Indian men’s team ended a 41-year-old Olympic medal drought by clinching bronze with a 5-4 win over Germany at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

“We are in the process of qualifying for the Olympics for 2024. We won the semi-finals against a strong Korean team and now we have a very good chance of winning the gold medal and qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

“I am sure India has a good chance to win the (Olympics) medal again because in the Tokyo Olympics, we were the bronze medallists. We fought very well and we have won the medal for the country,” Iqbal told reporters here on Thursday.

He was here as the chief guest for the final match of the third edition of Guru Hargobind Sahib Hockey tournament.

Iqbal, a member of the 1980 Moscow Olympics gold medal-winning team, said India is doing well in the Asian Games and has exceeded expectations.

Indian women’s team routs Nepal, makes fourth successive final

Two-time former champions India stormed into their fourth successive final of the Asian Games with a commanding 61-17 win over Nepal in the women’s kabaddi event here on Friday.

India, the last edition’s runners-up, faced little challenge from their rivals and led 29-10 at half time with Pooja Hathwala and Pushpa Rana spearheading the raids.

Overall, India inflicted five all-out in the match en route to making four out of four finals in the women’s kabaddi at the continental showpiece.

For India, Jharkhand youngster Akshima who was making her Asian Games debut was also impressive, making successful raids and earning two touch points.

The Indian men’s team, which finished with a bronze medal in the 2018 edition, will take on Pakistan in the semifinal later in the day.

Asian Games 2023 LIVE Updates: Uzbek cyclist Fomovskiy fails doping test

The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced on Thursday that Uzbekistan’s cyclist Aleksey Fomovskiy has tested positive for banned substances anabolic androgenic steroids.

“The sample was collected by the ITA at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 during an in-competition anti-doping control performed on 28 September 2023 during the Cycling Track Men’s Omnium-Points Race,” the ITA said, reports Xinhua.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect. He has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample.”

The 22-year-old Fomovskiy placed fifth in the men’s omnium points race on September 28.

PM Modi praises Asian Games medal winners

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the performance of Indian archers at the Asian Games in Hangzhou after the country’s compound archers’ teams of both men and women secured gold medals.

The women’s combine emerged triumphant in an edge-of-the-seat thriller while the men’s outfit secured the top prize without fuss as Indian compound archers swept all three gold medals on offer in team events, further bettering their best-ever show at the Asian Games on Thursday.

The women’s compound team edged Chinese Taipei by the thinnest of margins, securing the gold medal win by just one point with Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur shooting 60 out of 60 in the final round of a heart-stopping final.

The men’s trio of Abhishek Verma, Ojas Deotale and Prathamesh Jawkar downed South Koreans 235-230 to seal their sixth medal in archery.

In a post on X, Modi said, “Indian Archers all the way! Proud of our Men’s Archery team for winning the Gold Medal in Compound event!”

Prannoy, Satwik-Chirag assure India of Asian Games medals, Sindhu bows out in quarterfinals

HS Prannoy battled his way to the semifinals, becoming only the first Indian in 41 years to win a badminton medal in men’s singles at the Asian Games, but it was curtains for PV Sindhu in women’s singles here on Thursday.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then progressed to the last four, becoming the second Indian men’s doubles pair to secure a medal after Leroy D’sa and Pradeep Gandhe won a bronze in 1982.

Playing with a taping on his lower back and a belt under his shirt, Prannoy battled severe back spasm to dish out a performance for the ages, outshining Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia 21-16 21-23 22-20 in the quarterfinals to assure India a second badminton medal at the ongoing Games.

China women’s basketball coach Zheng Wei said familiarity was the key after the hosts retained their Asian Games title with a thrilling 74-72 win over old rivals Japan on Thursday.
