Bear Beats: Episode 1, For Competition Through Sept. 10

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Bear Beats is a weekly release that will be posted on Mondays to provide a look back at the past week of action and to preview the events for the upcoming week. The inaugural edition will feature volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, football, and golf. 

A look in the rear-view mirror: 

Volleyball: 

  • No. 14 volleyball is coming off a perfect 3-0 weekend at the East-to-West Battle in Claremont, Calif. 
  • After dropping the first set to No. 7 Johns Hopkins University on Friday, Sept. 8, WashU then won the next three sets to upend JHU 
  • In the nightcap on Friday, WashU topped No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a thrilling five-set match 
  • The Bears wrapped up play on Saturday, Sept. 9 against California Lutheran with a straight set sweep 
  • In the three-match weekend, sophomore Sam Buckley notched 122 assists, while junior Jasmine Sells secured 52 kills  

Men’s cross country: 

  • The Bears are coming off of a bye-week after hosting the Greenville Dual, Sept. 1 
  • Sophomore Conor Daly claimed the title with a time of 18:57.1

Women’s cross country: 

  • The women’s distance runners are enjoying a bye-week 
  • The program last competed at the Greenville Dual, Sept. 1 
  • First-year Amelie Maltz won the race as she crossed the finish line with a time of 15:46.7

Men’s soccer: 

  • Men’s soccer posted a 1-0-1 week  
  • In the program’s first match of the week against Principia College on Thursday, Sept. 7, the Bears cruised to a 5-0 victory 
  • Sophomore Peter Radovich earned a match-high three points in the victory 
  • The team concluded the week with a home match against Aurora University, Sunday, Sept. 10 
  • An AU penalty kick in the 81st minute served as the equalizer as the match ended in a 2-2 draw 
  • Junior Joseph Hipskind and sophomore Zach Susee both secured a goal in the draw  

Women’s soccer: 

  • The No. 10 Bears, who played a pair of matches last week, own a perfect 3-0 record 
  • WashU is currently outscoring its opponents 15-0 
  • In the program’s home opener against Carroll University on Friday, Sept. 8, WashU tallied four second half scores to run away with the 5-0 victory 
  • In the home opener, sophomore Grace Ehlert, graduate student Ally Hackett, senior Anna Viscovich, sophomore Kaci Karl, and junior Meryl McKenna each recorded a goal  

Football: 

  • After an opening-day victory, 44-27, against Hendrix College on Saturday, Sept. 2, the Bears are now on their bye-week 
  • Senior quarterback Matt Rush threw for four touchdowns, good for 277 pass yards, en route to earning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week award 
  • Junior receiver Collin Goldberg hauled in five receptions for a team-high 95-yards  

Golf: 

  • The golf team began their season at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational, Sept. 2-3 in Granville, Ohio 
  • WashU finished third in the two-day tournament  
  • Junior Sydney Kuo produced the top score for the Bears by posting a two-day total of 146  

On the horizon: 

Volleyball: 

  • The volleyball program is gearing up for a four-match week 
  • The Bears will make the short trip to Webster University for a 7 p.m. first serve on Wednesday, Sept. 13

  • The team will then travel to Whitewater, Wis. for the UW-Whitewater Invite II, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 15-16 
  • WashU will hit the floor against Saint Benedict on Friday, Sept. 15, before squaring off with Transylvania and host, UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Sept. 16

Men’s cross country: 

  • The men’s distance runners will head to Wheaton, Ill. to compete in the Gil Dodds Invite, Saturday, Sept. 16 
  • The race is slated to begin at 11 a.m. 

Women’s cross country: 

  • WashU will travel to Wheaton, Ill. for the Gil Dodds Invite, Saturday, Sept. 16 
  • The race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. 

Men’s soccer: 

  • The Bears will begin preparing for Millikin University  
  • WashU will travel to Millikin for a non-conference test on Saturday, Sept. 16 with a 5 p.m. start

Women’s soccer: 

  • WashU will host a triangular with DePauw University and Rhodes College, Friday-Sunday, Sept. 15-17 
  • The Bears will take on DePauw at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 and Rhodes on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.

Football: 

  • Head coach Aaron Keen will take his troops to Millikin University as the Bears are set to begin College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, Saturday, Sept. 16

Golf: 

  • The Bears will travel to Normal, Ill. to compete in the IWU Fall Classic, Sept. 16-17, at Ironwood Golf Course  

Men’s Tennis 

  • The men’s tennis team will begin the 2023-24 season with a flurry of action, Friday-Sunday, Sept. 15-17 
  • Part of the team will travel to River Forest, Ill. to compete in the Clay Court Tourney, Friday-Saturday, while part of the program will tackle the WTN Open, Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 16-17  

Women’s Tennis 

  • The women’s tennis program will also see a busy start to their schedule 
  • The Bears will host the Dwight Davis Invitational, Friday-Sunday, Sept. 15-17 
  • WashU is also set to compete in the St. Louis University Invitational, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 15-16
