GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — This Valentine’s Day, love is in the air, but the Better Business Bureau says romance scams are as well.
The BBB says online dating and social media have made it easier for scammers to steal information and trick people into falling for someone who doesn’t exist.
“Really, just be very careful, this one is especially tough because it tugs on people’s emotions, and when you fall for someone, you really want it to be true and real and honest and it might not necessarily be,” Meredith Radford, BBB of Eastern Carolinas.
The BBB is also telling people to be wary of consumer scams that come with any holiday. These include wrong number scams where they try to text the wrong number intentionally to try and bait information out of you. Fake florist scams are also popular where fake flower companies are set up to steal your money.
As always, the BBB says if an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is.
