Manipur blockade

The United Peoples’ Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO), two umbrella Kuki organisations, have withdrawn roadblocks in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on National Highway 2. In a joint statement, the two organisations, which represent among others former militant groups that have signed suspension of operations pacts with the government, said the blockade on the highway has been lifted with immediate effect, following an appeal by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Ajit Pawar claims support of 40 NCP MLAs

Ajit Pawar, the newly-inducted Deputy CM of Maharashtra, claims that he has support of over 40 MLAs of NCP. According to PTI, in a letter submitted to Raj Bhavan, Pawar has also claimed that apart from 40+ MLAs, six MLCs of NCP are also backing him.

NCP’s Ajit Pawar joins NDA government, takes oath as Deputy CM of Maharashtra

NCP leader and Sharad Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar on Sunday took oath as the deputy CM of Maharashtra. Additionally, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dhananjay Munde along with other NCP MLAs are present at Raj Bhawan. Nationalist Congress Party’s senior leader Ajit Pawar on Sunday met some party leaders and MLAs at his official residence in Mumbai. However, NCP president Sharad Pawar, who was in Pune, said he was unaware of the meet, but added that Ajit Pawar, as leader of opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra Assembly, can call a meeting of legislators. France arrests hundreds more amid unrest over teen killing

Protests that erupted in France in response to the killing of a 17-year-old by a police officer continued for a fifth night, The New York Times reported. Authorities arrested hundreds of people nationwide overnight Saturday and protesters clashed with police officers in riot gear. Taking to his Twitter handle, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that 427 people had been arrested overnight on Saturday. On Friday, more than 1300 people had been detained in France. He further said that 45,000 police officers were deployed nationwide on Saturday evening, a number similar to the night before, according to The New York Times report. (ANI)

Israel’s air force attacks Syria and Syrian air defense missile explodes over northern Israel

Israel carried out airstrikes on areas near the central Syrian city of Homs early Sunday causing material damage but no casualties, the Syrian military said in a statement. A Syrian anti-aircraft missile exploded over Israeli territory, the Israeli military said, prompting another round of strikes. Syrian state media quoted an unnamed military official as saying the air defenses shot down some of the missiles fired by Israeli warplanes flying over neighboring Lebanon. (AP)

Anti-encroachment drive underway by PWD in Delhi’s Bhajanpura

An anti-encroachment drive is being carried out by the PWD in Delhi’s Bhajanpura area to remove a Hanuman temple and Mazar. “This is a PWD road and they (concerned persons) were served notice to remove the structure themselves, but they did not remove it, so it was removed today,” said Sharat Kumar, SDM Seelampur. Delhi govt collects Rs 1,700 crore in excise duty, VAT in April-June quarter

The Delhi government’s Excise department has earned nearly Rs 1,700 crore in excise duty and value added tax in the first quarter of 2023-24, official data showed. In the 2022-23 fiscal, the department had raked in Rs 6,821 crore by selling over 62 crore bottles of liquor. The amount included Rs 5,548.48 crore as excise duty and Rs 1,272.52 crore as value added tax. The Excise department expects the revenues to increase in the next few months with the opening of more liquor shops. (PTI)
