Dunki actor on success of films like Animal, Pushpa: ‘Masses are angry, frustrated, filled with rage’ | Bollywood News

Dunki actor Vikram Kochhar spoke about the success of violent action movies this year, and said that audiences these days are filled with rage that they don’t know how to exercise.

animal dunkiRanbir Kapoor’s Animal grossed over Rs 850 crore worldwide; Dunki has grossed Rs 300 crore so far.

Dunki actor Vikram Kochhar spoke about the the film’s box office clash against Prabhas’ Salaar, and said that art isn’t something that should be pitted against itself. He also spoke about the rise in male-driven action films, a genre that has dominated Indian theatres this year, with films such as Pathaan, Jawan, Gadar 2, Leo, Jailer and most recently, Animal, delivering huge numbers.

In an interview with Bollywood Now, the actor speculated that the masses in India are angry, frustrated, and vengeful, which is perhaps why they are turning to this kind of cinema over more sensitive stories. “There are a lot of action-thrillers that are working these days, and a lot of people want to watch them. But this also depends on the political scenario of a given time. Look at how many wars are going on around the world. People are frustrated, angry, hateful, these feelings are prevalent. Everybody has vengeance in their heart, but they don’t think about where this will take them,” he said.

Vikram continued, “A friend of mine was telling me recently that a lot of people are craving power, but they don’t know how to execute it. When they see it on the big screen, their dreams are fulfilled. On the other hand, films have a responsibility towards the audience also. Only then can they be considered great. Look at Satyajit Ray’s films, there’s a reason for that… Masses don’t want to see this. But if the masses are irrational that doesn’t mean they should be given what they want. If they want to see someone’s throat being slit, you show it to them. Then you’re just amplifying certain things that you shouldn’t.”

The basic feeling in every human, he said, is love. But right now, the basic feeling is rage. He said that Dunki, whose box office performance is paling in comparison to that of Salaar, is the kind of movie that will continue finding new audiences well after its theatrical run. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the movie has grossed nearly Rs 300 crore worldwide in a week of release.
