A flight attendant has pointed out one of the major problems with displaying your contact details on your luggage tag – and what you should do instead to ensure people can get in touch if it goes missing
One of the biggest worries when travelling is whether or not your luggage will be waiting for you on the other side. Although most of the time you might simply go to the baggage carousel and pick it up, other times it might be sitting in an entirely different airport – or worst case, lost.
One thing you might do to make sure it returns to you when it’s found is put a luggage tag on it, where you can write details such as name, address, email address and phone number so that you can be contacted. However, if you’re planning on doing this, you should listen up, as a flight attendant has shared an important safety warning.
Although the luggage tag can be incredibly handy to quickly identify the owner, it could end up landing you in danger if you make a common mistake. Taking to TikTok, cabin crew member Ally explained: “Always make sure that your luggage tag has the contact information facing the other side. I see so many people with luggage tags and their information displayed for everyone to see. Their name, their address, their phone number, their email. That is way too much information for just anyone to have.”
Instead, Ally recommends flipping the label with the information on it to face the other way. That way, if it gets lost and someone does need to identify it, they can just turn the note around. However, it stops random people who don’t need to see it from getting your personal details.
She continued: “It’s great to have a luggage tag just not to have all of your information displayed for anyone to see at all times. I ride the train a lot and there are a lot of crazies on the train, I don’t need my information just there for everyone to see.”
People took to the comment section to share their own tips, with one helpful social media user writing: “I’d write an arrow or FLIP on it just in case whoever finds it thinks it’s blank.” Another added: “Mine says ‘open for contact info’ and it is located inside”.
Another flight attendant recently shared why you should never drink the water on the plane. According to Anton Radchenko, Travel expert and founder of AirAdvisor, the “in-flight tap water systems are rarely cleaned”. He added: “So, when you ask for a glass of tap water, hot chocolate, or a cuppa, you’re potentially drinking from dirty pipes.”
