UNDATED (AP) — Ten departing Pac-12 schools claim they should have a say in running the conference until they officially leave in August. They say Oregon State and Washington State are not entitled to seize control of “hundreds of millions of dollars” of revenue the league will earn in 2023-24. In a filing submitted in Washington State Superior Court, the Pac-12 and the University of Washington made the case conference bylaws do not allow schools to be removed from the board of directors while still in the league. Washington State and Oregon State filed a lawsuit in September, claiming they alone control the Pac-12.
UNDATED (AP) — Coaches in college basketball say tampering has grown more prevalent in the transfer portal era. NCAA rules prohibit contact with athletes at other schools unless they’re in the portal. But men’s coaches like Boston College’s Earl Grant and Duke’s Jon Scheyer say they’ve had players or families contacted improperly. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer says it’s also happened to her team on the women’s side. NCAA vice president of enforcement Jon Duncan says tampering is a “significant concern for us.” Duncan also says getting more leads from coaches could help the NCAA enforce rules prohibiting improper contacts.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — No. 5 Washington and No. 24 Southern California are two of the higher-scoring teams in the nation and boast two of the top QBs in the land. When all the points are scored and all the TD passes are thrown between Michael Penix Jr. and Caleb Williams, the winner will have the inside track to a spot in the Pac-12 championship game. The Huskies travel to the Coliseum for the first time since 2015. In other matchups, No. 20 UCLA faces a red-hot Arizona team that’s receiving votes in the AP Top 25 poll after beating ranked teams in two straight games.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — No. 5 Washington visits No. 24 Southern California this weekend at the Coliseum for a showdown with national title implications. The final month’s schedules look awfully daunting for both the Huskies and the Trojans, but the opportunities available to both teams are equally enticing. This meeting is a showdown between star quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr., whose Heisman candidacy lost some steam in the last two weeks. A meeting with USC’s porous defense is a perfect opportunity to crank it back up.
UNDATED (AP) — Oregon quarterback Bo Nix is coming off one of his most efficient performances of the season during the No. 6 Ducks’ 35-6 victory at Utah. The fifth-year senior threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns. This season he’s averaging 292.1 passing yards a game, 11th in the nation, with 21 touchdowns, fifth nationally. He’s run for 113 yards and three additional touchdowns. He’s increasingly getting Heisman buzz as Oregon prepares to host the California Golden Bears on Saturday at Autzen Stadium.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Tough defense has helped Utah grind out wins amid offensive struggles this season. Lately, however, the No. 18 Utes have shown some cracks. Utah enters Saturday’s showdown with Arizona State having allowed 33.5 points and 395.5 yards over its last two games. An inability to get stops on running plays helped Oregon average 5.3 yards per carry and gave Bo Nix more than enough room to pick apart the secondary in a 35-6 victory over Utah. Arizona State is positioned to take advantage of a leaky run defense. Over their last two contests, the Sun Devils totaled 380 rushing yards while averaging 5.4 yards per carry.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The numbers reflect the major turnaround the Colorado Buffaloes have undergone this season in Deion Sanders’ first season in Boulder. Just don’t ask the Buffaloes to paint too rosy a picture. They’re two wins shy of bowl eligibility with four games to go. But they don’t figure to be favored in any of them, starting Saturday night against No. 16 Oregon State at sold-out Folsom Field. Colorado enters as a 13 1/2-point underdog to the Beavers.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona is at the tail end of one of the most brutal stretches in college football this season. In previous years, five straight games against ranked opponents would have likely led to five straight lopsided losses. This year’s team has handled the difficult stretch well. After two close losses to start the ranked-team gauntlet, the Wildcats are coming off consecutive wins over AP Top 25 teams heading into Saturday’s game against No. 20 UCLA. The Bruins will be a huge test for Arizona.
