Here’s why you should have Katrina Kaif’s favourite foods | Food-wine News

We all make a face with vegetables like turai or ridge gourd, or even gobhi or cauliflower. But did you know that these are some of Tiger actor Katrina Kaif‘s favourite foods? Well, we were in surprise too as she listed down the same along with another healthy appetiser on her Instagram Stories as part of an Ask-Me-Anything session.

In response to one user’s question, she shared, “Turai ki subzi, gobhi ki subzi, and broccoli soup”.

Intrigued by Kaif‘s choices, we decided to understand how such foods help.

Turai ki subzi

Clinical dietitian Garima Goyal said that ridge gourd is low in calories. “This makes turai ki subzi a great option for individuals aiming to maintain or lose weight, as it provides nutrients without contributing significantly to daily caloric intake. The fibre content aids in digestion by promoting regular bowel movements, preventing constipation, and supporting a healthy digestive system,” said Goyal.

Goyal also mentioned that vitamins and minerals (A and C) are crucial for maintaining healthy vision, skin, and the immune system. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, supporting the immune system and promoting skin health. “The high water content in ridge gourd contributes to overall hydration, which is essential for various bodily functions, including temperature regulation and nutrient transport,” Goyal said.

Cauliflower is a nutritional powerhouse, providing a wide range of vitamins and minerals essential for overall health. Vitamin C supports the immune system, while vitamin K is crucial for blood clotting and bone health. “For those focusing on weight management or following a low-calorie diet, cauliflower is an excellent choice. It’s low in calories and carbohydrates, making it a filling option without contributing significantly to daily caloric intake,” said Goyal.

According to Goyal, the fibre in cauliflower aids in digestion by promoting regular bowel movements, preventing constipation, and supporting a healthy digestive system. This can contribute to a feeling of fullness and help with weight management.

Goyal also mentioned that the antioxidants in cauliflower, including glucosinolates and carotenoids, help neutralise free radicals. This may contribute to reducing oxidative stress in the body and lowering the risk of chronic diseases.

Versatility in cooking – Cauliflower’s neutral flavour and versatile texture make it a valuable ingredient in various dishes. It can be used as a low-carb substitute for rice, mashed potatoes, or even pizza crust, offering a healthier option in many recipes.

Broccoli soup

Soups are often easier to digest, and the cooking process can break down cell walls in vegetables, making the nutrients more accessible to the body.

Broccoli is a nutrient-dense vegetable, and when used in soup, it retains many of its essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and potassium. “Broccoli contains antioxidants, such as sulforaphane and quercetin, which help neutralise free radicals in the body, potentially reducing oxidative stress and the risk of chronic diseases,” said Goyal.

Broccoli soup can be a filling and low-calorie option for those aiming to manage their weight. “The fibre content contributes to a sense of fullness, potentially reducing overall calorie intake,” said Goyal.

The expert explained that vitamin C in broccoli is known for its immune-boosting properties, contributing to the body’s defense against infections and illnesses. “Broccoli soup can be heart-healthy due to its fibre content, which helps lower cholesterol levels. Additionally, the presence of sulforaphane may have cardiovascular benefits,” said Goyal.

What more? Broccoli is a good source of vitamin K and calcium, both important for bone health. Including broccoli soup in your diet may contribute to maintaining strong and healthy bones, mentioned Goyal.

Broccoli soup is versatile and can be adapted to various tastes. It can include additional nutritious ingredients like carrots, onions, and garlic, enhancing both flavour and nutritional content.
