Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl 2024 over 49ers in Vegas

LAS VEGAS —

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially back-to-back Super Bowl Champions.

After a hard-fought game that stretched into overtime, the Chiefs claimed another Lombardi Trophy by a score of 25 to 22 over the San Francisco 49ers.

After a week of building media frenzy, Super Bowl Sunday finally arrived for the Chiefs and 49ers in their rematch of LIV.

It had a different feel but the same outcome.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid, tight end Travis Kelce, pop star Taylor Swift and the rest of the Chiefs became the first back-to-back NFL Champs since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots.

The win fully cements the Mahomes, Reid and Kelce era in Kansas City as one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.

The game was sealed with a redemption-fueled touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr., who will now forever go down as a Chiefs playoff hero.

To get the job done, Kansas City had to get through a 49ers team led by the same head coach, Kyle Shanahan, who was on the losing side of the first Super Bowl victory of the Mahomes-Reid era.

Tight end George Kittle made his return to the matchup, this time complimented by a new quarterback in the form of ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Brock Purdy and an entire offense stacked with weapons — including running back Christian McAffrey and receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.

Purdy comported himself well, but was ultimately no match for a tactile Chiefs defense and the inevitability of Mahomes.

This matchup may feature the same teams as Super Bowl LIV, but the 49ers and Chiefs both carried very different identities into the game’s second iteration. In a near-complete role reversal, it was the 49ers who brought along the NFL’s most explosive offense and the Chiefs who boasted a swarming NFL-best defensive operation.

• Patrick Mahomes willed the Chiefs to the win with a near-perfect performance. Other than one ill-advised interception, the quarterback put up 333 yards passing, two touchdowns and completed 76 percent of his 46 passes.
