Nobel prizes: The premier scientific awards kick off with the medicine prize being announced by a panel at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

Central banks: European Central Bank vice-president Luis de Guindos addresses the Foro Empresarial El Diario Vasco in San Sebastián. Catherine Mann, an external member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, talks about UK macro and monetary policy at a London event sponsored by Redburn and Rothschild, while her colleague Shoib Khan speaks at the Association of Financial Mutuals’ annual conference.

UK transport: ScotRail begins a six-month trial, funded by the Scottish government, offering only off-peak fares to make public transport more affordable.

Economic data: S&P Global/Cips manufacturing purchasing managers’ index data is published for the EU, France, Germany, Italy and the UK. Nationwide releases its September and third-quarter UK house price indices.
