Mattel’s latest launch is inspired by the Barbie movie

Mattel’s latest Barbie is directly inspired from the ‘Weird Barbie’ in the Greta Gerwig movie. The character, which was played by Kate McKinnon, now has its very own doll. The newly minted doll is dressed in a bright pink umbrella dress. Thne doll has messy streaked fountain hair and a neon pair of snake skin boots. The doll mirrors each facet of Kate McKinnon’s character in the film down to the crayon scribblings and drawn-over dress.

As a matter of fact, the promotional images of the doll also feature her in interesting splits – a direct reflection of how McKinnon’s character was introduced in the film. The doll marks a unique offering from Mattel, moving away from the perception of Barbie necessarily meeting all beauty-standard stereotypes.

Who is Weird Barbie?

Weird Barbie was introduced in the Greta Gerwig movie as essentially an outcast, living on the outskirts of Barbie Land. Margot Robbie’s ‘stereotypical’ Barbie goes to Weird Barbie for help once she starts malfunctioning. Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie then serves as a voice of reason and urges Robbie’s Barbie to go forth in to the real world to restore order in Barbie Land.
