GREENSBORO, N.C. — Although we are not expecting anything serious with the Winter Weather Advisory, it’s better for everyone to be safe than sorry.
If you’ve been driving around Friday, you might have seen the North Carolina Department of Transportation trucks spreading salt brine on all the major highways and interstates.
Guilford County’s Street Maintenance and Operations Manager said they erring on the side of caution.
NCDOT crews began prepping the streets and it’s easy to see when a road has been treated because it will have faint white lines where the salt mixture has dried. It’s a welcome sign for people who have to be out on the roads, no matter the type of weather.
“I work at the hospital and you have to go to work,” Mount Airy resident Penny Riddle shared. “It’s a requirement. I have to go. [I] have to take care of people. I am not overly nervous. I’m worried about other people and people who don’t want to take their time but you just have to do it. Just don’t be nervous, drive with confidence, and take your time.”
The Greensboro Coliseum is hosting an RV show this weekend. One RV business owner said he’s worried the winter weather could drive away customers but ultimately wants his employees and others to be safe.
“With our display being outside, we’re kind of upset about it because we’re really not going have any customers,” RV USA President David Hall said. “It’s always a concern. Safety is key for my employees, but hopefully, the weatherman is wrong and we’ll get a good break other than that. We’ll be here no matter what.”
As for the roads, we reached out to several local NCDOT offices. The state said workers were out prepping all morning and all counties will either have skeleton crews or on-call workers.
Winston-Salem will have workers on call, as will the city of High Point.
In Greensboro, road crews will be on standby Friday night. They’ll be paying close attention to bridges and any trouble spots could become slick, if and when freezing rain starts to fall.
