A Windstream Data Center in Lincoln had an incident that resulted in 911 being down in parts of southeast Nebraska, according to Nebraska Public Service Commission.

Governor Jim Pillen said a fire in Lincoln was the culprit.

Gov. Pillen’s office released a statement on the incident:

“The Governor is troubled that this critical component of our public safety infrastructure has failed twice in such a short period of time. A prompt and comprehensive inquiry must be conducted, and steps must be taken to ensure the PSC’s 911 system does not fail again.”

Windstream is working to restore the system, and a Windstream spokesperson said, they expect the outage to end within three to five hours.

When asked about their failsafes, Windstream’s spokesperson said, the fire took out the commercial power which is the first level. Then the generators kicked in which worked until “eventually they failed,” and then they have batteries as their third option which couldn’t support the system for that long.
