New confirmed cases of West Nile virus
The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed additional West Nile virus cases in the state this year. Eight new cases have been identified.Those cases bring the number of 2023 cases to 10 in total. NMDOH reported its first human cases of West Nile late last month.Here are the county locations of the recent infections, according to the health department: Bernalillo, Santa Fe, Sandoval, San Miguel, Torrance and Valencia, respectively.The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, and NMDOH says the species is more active at dawn and dusk. It also advised the public to use insect repellents and remove water-holding containers mosquitoes can utilize for reproducing.
