Paris: The French Fencing Federation announced today, Friday, the suspension of French fencer Ysora Thibault, one of the most prominent candidates in the epee category at this year’s Paris Olympics, after an anti-doping test showed an “adverse analytical result.”
Thibus, 32, is the 2022 foil world champion. She captured silver in the team event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“The French Fencing Federation has just been informed by the International Testing Agency (ITA) acting on behalf of the International Fencing Federation (FIA) that fencer Ysora Thibus was tested on January 14 and found to have a negative analytical result,” the French Federation said. He said in a statement.
“The FIA adds that in accordance with Article 7.4.1 of its Anti-Doping Rules, Ysora Cebus has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect from 8 February 2024.”
The ITA said Thibus’s sample tested positive for Ostarine, a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM), which is illegal for human consumption but exists on the black market, according to USADA. Some supplements contain ostarine, which can improve lean body mass.
“If analysis of Sample B is requested and the result of Sample A is confirmed, the case will be considered as a confirmed violation of the anti-doping rules,” the ITA said in a statement.
“If analysis of the B sample is not requested, the case will also proceed as a confirmed anti-doping violation. The athlete will have the opportunity to provide her explanations for the result.
Tebus denied any wrongdoing.
“As difficult as this ordeal may be, I assure you of my unwavering strength and integrity,” she wrote in a statement.
