Police provide update on shooting that injured North Versailles police officer

Police have a suspect in custody after an officer was shot early Friday morning while responding to a domestic disturbance in North Versailles. Allegheny County Police said the officer was shot around 3:39 a.m. when North Versailles officers responded to the domestic call at a home in the 200 block of Arlington Avenue.”There were shots fired outside of the residence. When officers responded, they located a suspect in the alley in the rear of the 200 block of Arlington Avenue. When they encountered the suspect, he did not follow the officers’ commands, produced a handgun and fired shots at the officers,” said Superintendent of Allegheny County Police Christopher Kearns. “One of the North Versailles officers was wounded by this gunfire. The officers returned fire and the suspect fled on foot.” The officer was taken to a local hospital in “good condition,” according to Kearns. The officer has since been released and is recovering at home. The suspect was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m. Friday after a roughly five-hour search. For several hours, police officers from several municipalities were staged around different areas within a mile of the scene. Several officers are staging around a wooded area. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 saw drones flying over the wooded area and K-9 officers being deployed with their handlers. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 also saw a handgun next to an evidence marker in the middle of Delaware Avenue, about a block away from where police say the gunfire exchange happened. Police have not released the name of the suspect or the officer as of Friday morning. “Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to keep us safe every day. That doesn’t stop during the holidays,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said on X. “Lori and I are grateful and relieved the officer shot in North Versailles early this morning is on his way to recovery. We’re thankful for your service.”
