Barclay: ‘Israel has a right both to defend itself and to deter future attacks from Gaza’

With the Gaza Strip completely under siege, without electricity, water, or fuel supplies, we asked the health secretary if he has any sympathy with the people living there.

Steve Barclay told Sky News: “The UK does have sympathy – that’s why we contribute about 10% of the aid that is distributed in the region through the United Nations.

“It’s why the foreign secretary was in Israel yesterday talking with counterparts about minimising the civilian casualties.”

But he added: “We should also be very clear that it’s the terrorist organisation Hamas that has put the people in Gaza at risk.

“They are the ones that are embedding military operations in civilian areas, they are the ones that have taken hostages from Israel into Gaza, and Israel has a right both to defend itself and to deter future attacks from Gaza.”

Mr Barclay also said that “everyone has a responsibility in terms of minimising civilian casualties”.
