Remains of missing Iowa man found; suspect charged with murder

Iowa investigators charge suspect with murder after finding remains believed to be missing man

Investigators have a suspect in custody after finding the remains of an adult they believe to be a missing Ottumwa man.According to a news release, Division of Criminal Investigation agents and area police officers served a search warrant near Ollie, Iowa. Investigators found the remains of an adult who they believe to belong to Craig Smith, who was reported missing from Ottumwa last month.Officials have been unable to confirm the remains belong to Smith due to the condition of the remains but have tentatively identified the remains based on evidence and statements collected during the investigation.Jeffrey Gautreaux, 44, was charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse. The investigation remains ongoing.
