Sania Mirza may have retired from competitive tennis but her heart still yearns to be in touch with the sport. Having scaled the heights in her last appearance at the Australian Open in 2023, this time Sania will wield the microphone from the studios of Sony TV in Mumbai.
Last year, when Sania and Rohan Bopanna lost the mixed doubles final, it was emotional. This time, Sania will try and bring out the same emotions in a different way. To have been part of tennis for over three decades, it is not easy to walk away.
“It (commentary) helps me stay in touch with the game (tennis) that has been my life,” Sania Mirza told RevSportz on Monday.
This is not the first time Sania will be doing commentary. For someone who is articulate and a wonderful student of the game, speaking on the sport will come naturally. She was at Wimbledon in 2023 and did a TV stint, while she also played exhibition matches.
“She enjoys commentating,” said Imran Mirza, her father, coach and mentor. “Sania understands the game well and since she has played with most of the women and some of the men and knows them personally, temperamentally and their game technically, Sania will be able to giver her insights which viewers enjoy.”
When superstars retire, there is always the possibility of reinventing the wheel. Cricketers, tennis players and even football heroes have moved to commentary in quick time. Indian tennis has seen a superstar like Vijay Amritraj become a superhit as TV commentator, even as his son Prakash has done extremely well for Tennis Channel.
In international tennis, from Billie Jean King to earlier legends like Sue Barker, they have been the face of tennis on television. Sania steps into familiar terrain and a role which she had thought of even earlier.
When she was a teenager, Sania had even contemplated doing her degree in journalism. That her career roared and she won six Grand Slam titles is testimony to her hard work.
For the die-hard tennis fans who crave insight, Sania as commentator and analyst for the season’s first Grand Slam in melting Melbourne is good news indeed.
