Berthoud plans events for Shop Small Saturday

Shop The town of Berthoud is encouraging people to shop local for the holidays through a special drive.

Events kick off with Shop Small Saturday on Nov. 25, when the town will feature holiday markets to encourage shoppers to explore downtown Berthoud businesses.

According to a town news release, about 70 cents of every dollar residents spend stays in the town. “In fact, every dollar you spend at a local business returns three times more money to the local economy than one spent at a chain and almost 50 times more than buying from a large online retailer,” the town’s announcement said.

Businesses holding events Nov. 25  include:​

• City Star Handmade Market: 1-5 p.m., with more than a dozen local makers in the taproom and beer garden tent.

• Cowboy Christmas: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., outdoor event by The Rancher’s Wife with vendors, food trucks,​ and Santa available for free photos.

• Marley & Moose: 1-5 p.m.,  cookies and a hot cocoa bar and the patio.

• Wildfire Arts Center Annual Holiday Artisan Market: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with local artisan booths with handmade gifts.

• You & Me Floral will wrap Berthoud-bought gifts.

Fort Collins energy manager honored for lifetime achievement

The Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) announced its 2023 Leadership in Energy Efficiency Awards  on Nov. 14, giving a Lifetime Achievement Award to John Phelan, the energy services manager at City of Fort Collins Utilities.

Soon to retire, Phelan has worked at Fort Collins Utilities for 21 years, where he has directed the effort to advance Fort Collins’ climate and energy goals with efficiency, renewables, electrification and grid flexibility programs, and services rooted in equity and resilience, according to a news release.

“John has led the development and implementation of Fort Collins Utilities’ energy efficiency programs for more than two decades, programs that have exceeded ambitious energy savings goals and are integral to the city’s efforts to cut its harmful climate pollution,” Howard Geller said in the release.

• The Human Bean held its biggest fundraiser on Oct. 20, raising $67,598.23 to provide financial assistance to overcome barriers related to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and all cancers, for patients at Banner and UCHealth facilities in Northern Colorado. The funds are being equally divided between local Banner and UCHealth facilities.

• Wing Shack is holding its 10th annual Turkey Drive. Customers can donate a turkey at their local restaurant and get $5 off an order. Additionally, the restaurant will donate $5 per turkey to food banks. Donations at Loveland and Fort Collins locations will benefit the Food Bank for Larimer County.

• A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 3-5 p.m. Dec. 1 for the Dr. Clarence Holmes Dental Hygiene Suite at Front Range Community College’s Larimer Campus. During the event Holmes, the Denver Dental Society’s first African-American member and the founder and 20-year president of the Cosmopolitan Club, will be honored. The event also marks the inauguration of a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the college’s pursuit to expand entry points into dental hygiene education and practice in the region.

• Innosphere’s 2024 CleanTech Incubation Program will be taking applications through Dec. 1. The program works to accelerate the success of technical founders, startups from federal labs, university startups, and entrepreneurs building science and tech-based companies, according to a news release. Industries the program supports include, but are not limited to: renewables, energy, solar and wind, waste management and sustainable water; transportation, electric vehicles and sustainable mobility; buildings and infrastructure, electricity and utilities; regenerative agriculture and natural resources; and climate solutions and environmental monitoring. This is the firm’s seventh year to receive this recognition.

• State Farm has awarded the University of Northern Colorado two grants totaling $50,000 as a part of its Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant program. The funds will help create scholarships for students pursuing unpaid internships or work placements and funding workshops and resources that support career readiness, and will fund scholarships for studentsin the Kenneth W. Monfort College of Business.

• Covidien LP of Mansfield, Mass., has been assigned a patent (No. US 11806038 B2, initially filed Oct. 2, 2020) developed by three inventors, including Kenneth E. Netzel of Loveland, for “Surgical instrument and method facilitating testing jaw force of the surgical instrument.”

• Hach Co. of Loveland has been assigned a patent (No. US 11808733 B2, initially filed Jan. 7, 2021) developed by Corey Alan Salzer of Fort Collins for “Square wave amperometry alkalinity measurement.”

• MikeysQuickCoupler LLC  of Gillette, Wyo., has been assigned a patent (No. US 11808385 B2, initially filed July 7, 2022) developed by Timothy M. Acosta of Loveland and Michael L. Acosta of Gillette for “Split coupler for pipes.”
