TECNO takes the AI plunge with new, ‘intelligent’ features

Smartphone and consumer tech brand TECNO has, on Tuesday (February 27), unveiled its latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, known as TECNO AI, to enhance users’ mobile experience. Announcing at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, TECNO said it aims to bridge the gap between current mobile devices and AI capabilities, presenting an AI-powered ecosystem designed to “revolutionise intelligent software”.

Jude You, Director of Engineering at TECNO, stressed on the company’s vision for an AI-driven future of smart devices. Speaking during Tuesday’s keynote, You said the implementation of AI in TECNO’s new smartphones, AI and AR-powered products is aimed at making these advancements accessible to a broad audience.

TECNO’s AI capabilities extend to simplifying and optimising various aspects of daily life, including phone operation, information acquisition, content creation, and service acquisition. TECNO said partnerships with industry leaders like Google and MediaTek highlight the brand’s commitment to integrating AI into every facet of the mobile experience.

The collaboration with Google includes the integration of Google AI Suites, such as Google Gemini, Duet AI, and Gmail AI features, demonstrating TECNO’s dedication to enhancing efficiency and creativity for users. Additionally, TECNO harnesses the power of MediaTek’s latest innovations, specifically the Dimensity 9300 chipset, known for its advanced AI capabilities.

TECNO’s AI features extend to social media communication, introducing features like real-time translation for phone calls and automatic video subtitle generation on social media apps. These capabilities address language constraints in social media interactions, offering users a seamless experience, TECNO said.

Coming to photography, TECNO AI brings features such as AI Portrait Enhancer, which caters to diverse skin tones using generative AI technology. Additional features include the AI Eraser for easy removal of unwanted objects from photos and Picture Cutouts for creating shareable stickers. TECNO also said its AI enhances video calls with ‘AI Beautify & Makeup’ effects and ‘AR Face’ enhancements, “providing a fun and engaging experience for users”.

If all of this sounds familiar, it is because many of these features were first introduced by Google on its Pixel 8 lineup, and later by Samsung in its Galaxy S24 lineup.
