ALPENA – The Alpena News Business Expo and Newspapers in Education Book Sale will take place this Saturday, with an entertaining twist — Revolution Dance will be performing for attendees at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The business expo and NIE used book sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the APlex main ballroom. There is no entry fee.

“We’ll have lots of vendors — local businesses out there talking about what they do, and some of them will have some of the products that they sell available at the expo,” said Justin Hinkley, publisher/editor of The Alpena News. “We’ll have our very popular Newspapers in Education used book sale, where you can get books for very little money, and help a good cause.”

He explained that NIE provides newspapers to local schools at no cost for use in the classroom to help with literacy, knowledge of current events, and more.

“We deliver newspapers to the classrooms,” Hinkley said. “And the teachers really can use the papers in whatever way they want. I’ve seen teachers use them in very different ways. With young kids, it could be something as simple as, ‘Let’s find a noun.’ And they go and they look through the headlines.”

He gave an example of how older students might use the newspapers.

“I’ve seen English teachers use it for older kids, talking about the difference between fact and fiction, and opinion and fact,” he said. “Teachers get to use this as another tool that they have for educating kids.

“This is all no cost to the schools because of the generosity of the people who shop at the book sale and donate to NIE throughout the year.”

He added that he appreciates all the people who donated books to the sale, making it possible to raise funds for NIE. Most of the books are priced at $1 and $2.

Dancers from Revolution Dance will perform twice at the event.

“New this year, we’re going to have Revolution Dance, which is a local dance troupe out of Harrisville,” Hinkley said. “It’s a great show that Revolution Dance puts on.”

Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase at the expo, and door prizes donated by local businesses will be given away all day.

“There are door prizes all throughout the day,” Hinkley said. “You can sign up at The Alpena News tent at the expo.”

He added that the book sale will surely have something for everyone, with just about every genre you can think of.

“Your kids will enjoy shopping at the book sale as much as you will,” Hinkley said.

He said the event is family friendly, and that everyone will find something they like there.

“Come on out and have a great time,” Hinkley said. “We’re excited to have this every year.”

Hinkley added that he wants to thank the advertisers who help make The Alpena News Business Expo possible.
