TRAVEL SMART – Preparing for your summer trip | News

You’ve budgeted for your trip, chosen your destination and started your preparations. Here are our top tips for travelling like a pro.

1. Determine if you need a visa. Some countries require a visa even if you will only be there in transit for a few hours. Always check visa information for all portions of your trip. You don’t want to be seen on an episode of ‘Locked up Abroad’.

2. Check expiration dates. Check your travel documents and those of your travel companions well in advance so that there will be enough time to complete emergency renewals, if necessary. Don’t be caught by surprise if you check your passport on the morning of travel only to see that your passport or visa has expired. (Yes, this actually happens.)

3. Opt to upgrade your experience. Consider purchasing upgrades with your frequent-flyer miles instead of a plane ticket. In many cases it’s a better use of your miles, and you get to travel like the VIP you are. Don’t have a frequent-flyer number? It’s easy to do so on the airline’s website or through a travel agent.

4. Be prepared for the airport. Check your flight before leaving your house to make sure it’s on time. Always pack at least one change of clothes in your carry-on luggage, in the event your luggage is lost or delayed. Research the layout of the airport when connecting, especially between terminals, so that you can minimise time spent asking for directions.

5. Avoid unnecessary fees. The number one expense at the airport for travellers is baggage fees. Invest in a small luggage scale, and weigh your bags before leaving home. Alternatively, there’s the ultimate Jamaican method: stand on your scale holding the bag and subtract your weight.

6. Be aware of new regulations or events that may affect your trip. Try to read local news on your destination, familiarise yourself with the terms and conditions of your ticket and contact your travel agent with any questions.

7. Be ready for security points. Wear shoes that can be easily slipped off. Remove your belt, shoes, jacket, keys and coins before getting to the scanner. Ensure that all liquids are travel size, and in a clear plastic bag. Have your passport open to the picture page for quick processing.

8. Dress comfortably. Airports are almost always freezing, so make sure you have a scarf or sweater. Wear comfortable shoes, especially if you have a long walk to the gate or to your connecting flight. For longer flights, wear loose comfortable clothing (jeans are not the most comfortable on long flights).
