Dhaka has proposed visa-free travel between India and Bangladesh with an eye to enhancing people-to-people connectivity in the wake of trouble getting tour permission.
Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen discussed the issue with his Indian counterpart S Jaishangkar when they met on the sidelines of the IORA meeting in Colombo on Wednesday.
In response to his proposal, Mr Jaishangkar said India would scrutinise the feasibility of the proposal.
Dr Momen said he got a good number of requests from Bangladeshis to help them in obtaining Indian visa.
“One such request came to me through mobile message when I was in Colombo and I showed it to Mr Jaishangkar who was sitting beside me.”
After viewing the message, the India external affairs minister “assured me that he’d talk to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to resolve the problems regarding obtaining Indian visa”.
Dr Momen mentioned that the issue was widely discussed in the recently held Indo-Bangladesh conference.
“We’re also working to establish direct road connectivity between Silchor of Assam and Sylhet,” he said.
