Wisconsin State Patrol preparing for drunk drivers on New Year’s Eve | News

In just a few days we’ll be ringing in a new year, with the same safety concerns.

MADISON (WKOW) — In just a few days we’ll be ringing in a new year, with the same safety concerns.

Troopers with the Wisconsin State Patrol say they know New Year’s Eve is a notorious night for drinking and driving, so they’re preparing to keep an even closer eye on the roads.

Wameng Vang with the Wisconsin State Patrol says they’ll be working with law enforcement agencies across the state to monitor roads as “drive sober” campaigns are in full swing.

“To enhance public safety and prevent needless tragedies by discouraging folks from making dangerous and irresponsible decisions,” Vang said. “Regardless of the situation, I think it’s always best [to just call] an Uber or finding a designated driver to drive you around.”

Vang says he knows charges from ride share apps can be expensive, but safety will always be a worthy investment.

“When it comes to OWIs and court fees along with that it could possibly be up to $10,000 and you could be losing out on a lot more,” Vang said. “Just paying the $50 Uber fee is going to save you a lot.”

If you’re on the roads this weekend and see a driver who seems like they could be under the influence, Vang encourages people to contact law enforcement so they can intervene before anything happens.

“If you get the license plate that’d be great,” Vang said. “Just get a description of the vehicle color and make if you can.”

Vang says there’s no reason to put yourself in harm’s way, though.

“Don’t do anything unnecessary [like] driving up next to them,” Vang said. “That could put you in harm’s way as well. Just back up, slow down a little bit. If you don’t feel comfortable, you can pull over and wait for that individual to pass or at least get off and exit.”

If you’re heading to parties with alcohol in your car, Vang says it’s always best practice to keep those in the trunk.
