10 earn All-MVFC honors for YSU | News, Sports, Jobs

Youngstown State had 10 players named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference all-league team. YSU had five second-team All-MVFC picks and five honorable-mention All-MVFC selections.

Record-breaking receiver Bryce Oliver, defensive end Dylan Wudke, running back Tyshon King, offensive lineman Jaison Williams and cornerback Troy Jakubec all earned second-team honors. Oliver was a first-team selection in 2022 while Wudke was second-team pick last year and Williams had twice been named honorable mention in his career.

King also earned a spot on the conference’s All-Newcomer squad, which was announced Tuesday.

Meanwhile, quarterback Mitch Davidson, fullback/tight end Jake Benio, offensive lineman Ryan Johnson, linebacker Alex Howard and long snapper Sam Merryman made the honorable mention list. It’s the first time each of the five have earned All-MVFC honors in their respective careers.

For the first time since 2003, and only the second time in school history, no YSU players earned spots on the MVFC first team. The Penguins were one of just four teams without a first-team selection, joining Indiana State, Western Illinois and Murray State.

South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski and running back Isaiah Davis were named So-Offensive Players of the Year, while South Dakota linebacker Brock Mogensen was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Illinois State running back earned Newcomer of the Year honors, Illinois State’s Tye Niekamp was Freshman of the Year and South Dakota head coach Bob Nielson was named Coach of the Year.

The Dakota schools had 20 of 31 first-team selections while Northern Iowa had five first-team selections and Illinois State had three.

The Penguins are one of just five conference teams remaining in the FCS playoffs this season. YSU travels to No. 8 seed Villanova on Saturday for a second round matchup after defeating Duquesne 40-7 last week. Kickoff at Villanova Stadium is set for noon.
