Adidas signs up Michael Penix Jr and Rome Odunze as first NIL football athletes

Adidas has added the Washington Huskies’ Michael Penix Jr and Rome Odunze to its name, image and likeness (NIL) roster, becoming the sportswear giant’s first American football student-athletes.

Contract:

  • Both players will participate in brand marketing campaigns
  • Penix Jr and Odunze join Adidas’ college sports NIL athlete lineup, which includes 15 female student-athletes

Context:

Adidas has partnered with the University of Washington since 2019, with several of the university’s athletes included in its larger NIL network that was launched last year.

Comment:

“Michael and Rome are two of the most promising young athletes in the country right now, and we’re thrilled to welcome them to our impressive roster,” said Rupert Campbell, president of Adidas North America.

“The US has the most exciting collegiate fan and student-athlete base in the world, and we’re proud to be doubling down in sports here – including our investment in NIL and university partners to assert our position as the leading sports brand in the college sports space.”

Coming next:

Adidas has looked to target college students and fans through its Originals brand, which launched a Rivalry and Forum shoe collection dedicated to both groups.
