All the new, exiting things to do outside Delta Center before Jazz games this season

Discover the exciting new activities outside the Delta Center before Jazz games this season—from new businesses and buildings around the arena to accommodate all the people coming downtown.

The Jazz draw 18,000 fans every game to the Delta Center, and keep in mind that Jazz games are only 30 percent of events at the arena.

People also come here for concerts and other big events, so all of this is pushing growth downtown.

Owner Matt Caputo of Caputo’s Market & Deli in Salt Lake City said he’s excited for the upcoming Jazz season.

“It makes it busier downtown, and when downtown is busy, Caputo’s is busy,” he said.

Caputo’s restaurant and specialty food store isn’t the only downtown business abuzz with excitement about the Jazz season opener.

Around the arena, new hotels, restaurants, and bars are moving in to cater to Jazz fans and other downtown visitors.

Dee Brewer is with Downtown Alliance.

“We looked at the top visitation days downtown last year and 78 percent of those had events at the Delta Center,” Brewer said.

That’s drawn developments like The West Quarter across from the arena which includes new hotels and restaurants. The location is on the site of the old downtown post office.

West of the arena, the old Union Pacific building at Gateway will become a hotel next year, but all the new development isn’t just to entertain and accommodate sport fans—it’s also for the rush of new downtown dwellers expected in the next two years.

“There are about 4900 people who live in the central business district today. There will be 10,000 when we occupy just what’s under construction now,” Brewer said.

With all the new development, parking does continue to be an issue. You may have to walk a bit, so don’t drive around expecting to get rock star parking at the arena.
