Apple signs long-term deal with Arm for chip technology

Apple and Arm signed a long-term deal for chip technology that “extends beyond 2040”.

The deal was revealed in Arm’s upcoming initial public offering (IPO) documents which were filed on 5 September. The documents also revealed that Apple was one of the many tech companies to have invested $735 million in ARM’s IPO.

SoftBank Group, which owns Arm, has a target valuation of US$50 – US$55 billion for the IPO. Customers such as Apple, Google, NVIDIA, and AMD have agreed to invest in the IPO.

Over 500 tech companies license the Arm instruction set to build their own processors, including Apple’s A-series chips for the iPhone and the M-series chips for the Mac. Furthermore, about 95% of the world’s smartphones is powered by a chip that was built using Arm’s architecture.
