Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro models could feature thinner screen bezels with new display technology

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are set to feature thinner bezels thanks to a new display technology called Border Reduction Structure (BRS), according to a report from Korean publication The Elec. This manufacturing technique allows for more compact control circuitry, enabling slimmer bezels on the devices without significantly increasing their overall footprint.

The report suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro will feature a 6.3-inch display, up from the current 6.1-inch screen on the iPhone 15 Pro, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will boast a 6.9-inch display, an increase from the 6.7-inch screen on its predecessor. Despite these larger screens, the overall size of the devices is not expected to grow significantly, as the reduction in bezel size will accommodate the increased display area.

However, The Elec also reports that Apple’s suppliers, including LG Display and Samsung Display, are facing challenges in reaching the production rates expected by the Cupertino-based company. “No company has stabilised the iPhone OLED production rate to the level that Apple expects,” the report states. This is due to the increased technical difficulty associated with the BRS technology, which involves placing the circuit under the bezel more tightly and bending some wiring down.

Apple and its suppliers have reportedly developed new heat-controlled heat dissipation technologies to address potential overheating concerns related to the BRS technique. This is expected to ensure that the iPhone 16 Pro models maintain optimal performance without compromising on the sleek design afforded by the thinner bezels.

The rumours of the iPhone 16 Pro’s thinner bezels follows the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which feature smaller borders than their predecessors.

The iPhone 16 series is expected to launch later this year in September.
