Gallery opening

HOBART — Mural on Main Art Gallery at 631 E. Main St. in Hobart will host an opening reception for its upcoming exhibit of the work of Bloomville-based artist Mao Sato from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30. The exhibit will run through Nov. 6.

According to a media release, Sato received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Tokyo and moved to Brooklyn in 1983. Sato settled in Bloomville in 2000. He lives and works out of the creamery.

His work has been featured in several group and solo shows in both Tokyo and New York. Sato is described as having an eye that captures the everyday, the mundane, the happenstance, the beautiful. With a repertoire that spans from photography, to painting, to sculpture; Sato creates a mood with his art that may be considered both serene and severe at the same time.

Mural on Main is open from noon until 4 p.m. weekends.

Solo exhibit

FLEISCHMANNS — 1053 Gallery will present “Atlas/Watershed,” an exhibit of paintings, map collages and monotypes by Chichester-based artist Christie Scheele, from Sept. 29 through Nov. 12. A public reception will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30.

According to a media release, the exhibit evolved from two previous shows and includes her pandemic experience of heightened absorption in, and interaction with, her backyard creek and adjacent acres of Catskills forest and stream.

Her paintings are described as an homage to the elements with a primary focus on water and its seasonal transformation from crystalline to abundant flow.

Water, as it carves the landscape, beckons and threatens in its power, reminding everyone of the nature of impermanence as it continues to shift form.

“Atlas/Watershed” includes an installation, “A Piece of the West Branch, 2023,” by artist and writer, Hovey Brock, incorporating river rock, sand, and detritus from the West Branch of the Neversink, in clear acrylic cubes arranged in serpentine fashion to imitate the river’s flow. Above the “river” is a banner that reads, “The West Branch of the Neversink Goes Rogue,” a reference to an increase in catastrophic floods along its length over the last 20 years.

The exhibit also receives audio accompaniment by recording artist, Brett Barry.

1053 Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday and by appointment.
