Tokyo Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain was out-punched in the lop-sided final to settle for a silver while Parveen Hooda signed off with a bronze medal at the Asian Games here on Wednesday.

Borgohain, the reigning world Asian champion, was thrashed by home favourite and two-time Olympic medallist Li Qian in the 75kg final.

The stage is set for an epic showdown as the Indian women’s hockey team goes head-to-head against China in the first semi-final scheduled to take place on Thursday at the Asian Games.

Both teams have shown remarkable form in the tournament and a place in the final is on the line in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

Indian shuttlers Sai Pratheek and Tanisha Crasto bowed out in the mixed doubles Round of 16 at the Hangzhou Asian Games while the duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also lost in the women’s doubles pre-quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Sai Pratheek and Tanisha Crasto faced defeat against world No. 9 Malaysian pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei 21-18, 21-8. Treesa-Gayatri went down 21-15, 18-21, 21-13 against Korean pair Kim Soyeong and Kong Heeyong.

India’s star javelin thrower, Olympic gold medalist and World Champion Neeraj Chopra will be starting his Asian Games campaign in the final of men’s javelin throw on Wednesday.

Neeraj will compete in the title clash in the javelin throw at 4:35 PM IST.

After winning the gold medal in the Archery Compound mixed team event, Ojas Deotale says, “We had no hopes, but we followed our process as planned… The weather condition was favourable. It was a bit cloudy and in between wind was there but we tackled it. Overall it was very nice… It was a goosebump moment (standing on the podium). It is that kind of moment that one can only feel but can’t explain…”

Indian boxer Parveen Hooda signed off with a bronze medal after losing to two-time world champion Lin Yu Ting of Chinese Taipei in the women’s 57kg semifinal here on Wednesday.

Parveen, the 2022 world championship bronze medallist, went down to Lin via a 5-0 unanimous verdict.

Parveen loses round 3 too to Chinese Taipei’s Yu Ting Lin in the semi-final of women’s 57kg. The Indian wins bronze, HT reported. 

The Indian duo of Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu rallied to enter the final of the mixed doubles squash event with a 2-1 win over their opponents from Hong Kong at the Asian Games here on Wednesday.

The Indians won 7-11, 11-7, 11-9 against Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yi and Wong Chi Him.

However, it was heartbreak for the second Indian pair of Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh as they lost to Aifa Binti Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Bin Mohd Kamal of Malaysia 11-8, 2-11, 9-11 in the other mixed doubles semi-final.

Two-time Olympic medallist Indian shuttler PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy sailed into the quarterfinals of the women’s and men’s singles badminton with straight game wins at the Asian Games here on Wednesday.

Former world champion Sindhu won the round of 16 match against Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-16 21-16, sealing it in her favour without breaking a sweat against the hapless Indonesian.

Malaysia won the second game of the mixed doubles squash match. 

Indian players Anahat-Abhay lead 8-9 against their Malaysian opponents.

Indian players Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand put up a brave fight before going down to South Korea’s Soyeong Kim and Heeyong Kong in the women’s doubles pre-quarterfinals.

Sunil Kumar kept India in hunt for its first Greco Roman medal in 13 years at the Asian Games by reaching the 87kg bronze play-off even as three of his compatriots exited the tournament here on Wednesday.

Sunil began with a close 4-3 win over China’s Fei Ping and followed that up with a technical superiority victory over Tajikistan’s Sukhrob Abdulkhaev, winning the quarterfinal in the first period itself.

The men’s javelin final event at Asian Games 2023 will take place at the HOC Stadium in Hongzhou and will begin from 4.35 pm IST.

First, in the pre-quarters match, he clinched a 4-3 win over China’s Peng Fei. Then later on, he secured a massive 9-1 win over Tajikistan’s Sukhrob Abdulkhaev in the quarterfinal, moving to the semifinals.

Saudi distance runner Mohammed Yousef Alasiri has become the second reported doping case at the Asian Games and has been provisionally suspended, officials said.

The 34-year-old had a sample collected on September 26 during out-of competition testing and did not take part in the men’s 10,000m four days later.

Pakistan’s first athletics world championship medallist Arshad Nadeem has pulled out of the Asian Games with a knee injury, foiling a javelin showdown with India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra on Wednesday.

The Games were also hit by a second doping case, with a Saudi runner banned after returning a positive drug test.

India’s Vikas loses 1-9 against China’s Lui Rui in men’s greco-roman 77kg quarterfinal.
