Atishi: Meet over, but city’s beautification to continue | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: Public Works Department minister Atishi on Monday said the beautification initiatives set in motion while preparing for the G20 Summit would be replicated in other parts of the city.
Addressing a joint press conference with urban development minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi said several roads were redesigned, landscaping was done, and lights and fountains were installed at various spots to welcome G20 guests. She said the plan to continue beautification was initiated on Monday itself with a comprehensive planning review meeting with PWD officials.
“On behalf of the Delhi government, MCD and CM Arvind Kejriwal, we would like to promise the people of Delhi that the whole city will be beautified in the coming days on the same lines as the G20 revamp. All the areas will be beautified, maintained and illuminated,” the PWD minister said, adding that the summit was successfully conducted due to “strict self-discipline” showcased by the people of Delhi and the hard work of all government agencies.
Atishi said Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had carried out systematic mechanised sweeping and washing of roads in key areas during the summit. Sanitation and cleaning work will now be carried out in a similar way in the whole of Delhi, she added.
She added that the Delhi government will fully support MCD in this initiative and in buying additional machines. “On the directions of CM Arvind Kejriwal, we have started this work immediately, without wasting any time. I held a review meeting with the PWD officials in the morning to explore how we can take forward the work done during the summit. From tomorrow, I will start visiting various areas of the city where such beautification and road improvement work is needed,” the minister said. Atishi said PWD had nearly 1,400 km of road network, and beautification, lighting, landscaping and improving of footpaths was required.
Bharadwaj said the government spent the taxpayers’ money in the beautification of roads, rejuvenation of historical monuments, and illumination of tourist destinations. “After the beautification of the city in the past few months, the Delhi government is now taking the responsibility of maintaining it with all its departments and MCD joining hands…and working dedicatedly to further improve and beautify other parts of the city,” he said.
The urban development minister said the residents of Delhi had to face traffic jams across the city in the last 15-20 days. “During the three days of the summit, they showcased strict self-discipline to allow smooth access to the foreign delegates,” he said.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said, “I congratulate the people of Delhi on the successful completion of G20…this could not have been possible without the cooperation of agencies like DDA, NDMC, MCD, PWD…Delhi government is trying to take credit for the arrangements when the actual credit goes to the LG”.
