“Ban bike taxis,” demand protestors marching to Freedom Park

Bangalore Strike News Today Live Updates:  A Bengaluru bandh has been called by the Federation of Karnataka State Private Transport Association today. The protestors from 32 private transport unions are holding a protest march from the city’s Majestic area to the Freedom Park. The federation, which includes unions of bus, auto and taxi drivers, among others, called the strike over the state government’s “failure” to fulfill their demands, including a ban on cab aggregator apps.

In the wake of the Bengaluru Bandh today, as cabs, autorickshaws and private buses stay off the roads, BMTC buses and Namma Metro are undertaking additional trips.

In other news, the Janata Dal (Secular) Sunday made its alliance with BJP official at a party workers’ meeting attended by JD(S) chief and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. Gowda said Kumaraswamy will hold talks with BJP national leaders in the coming days in which a seat-sharing pact for the 2024 general elections will be discussed. The decision to ally with BJP, he said, was “essential” to “save” the regional party in the state.

The Federation of the Karnataka State Private Transport Association, representing 32 transport unions, has announced a Bengaluru bandh on September 11 as the transport department failed to meet their 28 demands by August 31.

Private operators are demanding that their buses be included under the Shakti scheme (free bus travel for women) and they be provided with a financial package by the government. They are also asking for grant permits for school buses and vans, withdrawal of lifetime tax on vehicles, and greater regulation of app-based cab services, among others. They have sought a ban on bike taxi services, such as Rapido, as well.
