A Cañon City man who was wanted in connection with robberies in Pueblo County was taken into custody Tuesday evening after a standoff with authorities.

According to a press release from the Cañon City Police Department, local law enforcement had
been working with Investigators from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office to locate James Cain, 47, of Cañon City, who was wanted in connection to robberies in Pueblo County.

Authorities confirmed the location of Cain at a residence in the 1000 block of Phay Ave.

According to a press release, Cain was given several commands to leave the residence and come out peacefully, but he did not comply.

Because of Cain’s non-compliance, the Cañon City SWAT team was called to the residence to execute the search and arrest warrant. He was given additional commands but continued to ignore those commands, according to officials, which resulted in an escalation of force to compel compliance.

Cain was taken into custody without any further force and was transported to the Fremont County jail and is being held on the warrant out of Pueblo County. He is being held with no bond.

In the press release, Chief Schick said he is happy that this incident ended the way it did, the
collaboration that occurred between his team and the Pueblo and Fremont County Sheriff’s Office.

“The team apprehended a felony suspect, charged with a very serious crime who also had a significant criminal history,” Schick said. “The officers, detectives, and SWAT team operators performed very professionally and they served the community well today.”
