MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police said the department investigated 154 traffic fatalities last year and want to encourage people to not partake in the annual Wheels Up, Guns Down activities or drive recklessly this weekend.
Meanwhile, local law enforcement is preparing for Wheels Up, Guns Down riders over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
In past years, ATV, dirt bike riders and cyclists have driven recklessly on roads, even shutting down highways.
Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels said reckless driving will not be tolerated.
“Participating in such activities will result in police action, including arrests, citations, and your vehicle being impounded,” said Daniels.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol, will be monitoring roads for violators.
An FHP spokesperson said troopers have also seen bicyclists attempting to take over roadways, which is illegal.
“Traffic will be monitored in real time, individuals or groups interfering with motorists will be reported to troopers on patrol,” said FHP Lt. Alex Camacho.
Authorities also sent a reminder that ATVs and dirt bikes are not allowed on highways, public roads or streets, and they are implementing a no-tolerance policy.
