Cricket headlines six new Olympic sports for Los Angeles 2028

Australia’s chances of securing more Olympic gold medals has increased, as cricket headlines six new additional sports approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to take place when Los Angeles hosts the games in 2028.

Alongside cricket is the addition of baseball, flag football, lacrosse, squash and softball, which all got the tick of approval last night.

Whilst the Paris Olympics is still to come next year before LA, Australians have a reason to be excited for the future, particularly given Brisbane will host the games in 2032.

Cricket will be implemented into the Olympics in the exciting and popular T20 format, meaning matches will be quick and action-packed.

Sydney Olympics gold medallist and Brisbane Olympics organiser Nat Cook has expressed her excitement for the popular Australian sport to be included in 2028.

“What a great game that is to watch, it’s so exciting,” she told SENQ.

“The Aussies are very good at it, so it’s a great opportunity for us to win more medals.”

Australia’s female cricket side are currently the T20 World Cup champions, and the males are also one of the top countries for the format.

Although there is no certainty the sport will feature when Brisbane host the Olympics, as the IOC will note the interest of it in LA, Cook was hopeful that Aussies will be able to watch their side on home turf come 2032.

“It’s in LA, we’ve got a lot to do before it may have its opportunity for Brisbane, but we’re pretty hopeful, with my athlete hat on, that we think it might make it (there) as well,” she said.

Meanwhile, surfing headlines four new sports set to take place in next year’s Olympics in Paris.
