Crystal Palace set to sack Roy Hodgson, Oliver Glasner leading candidate to take over

Crystal Palace are set to sack manager Roy Hodgson, with former Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Oliver Glasner the leading candidate to replace him.

Hodgson, 76, will leave Palace 15th in the Premier League table, just five points above the relegation zone after three wins in the last 19 games.

Glasner has been out of work since leaving Eintracht at the end of the 2022-23 season with a year remaining on his contract, having won the Europa League and reached a DFB-Pokal final.

Palace announced on Thursday afternoon that their pre-match press conference, which was due to take place at 1:30pm (GMT), had been cancelled after Hodgson was taken ill during the morning’s training session.

Palace took seven points from their opening four games of the campaign but have recorded only three wins since September and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round by Everton.

A 3-1 home defeat by Chelsea on Monday night was their fourth in five games, while during a humiliating 4-1 defeat by arch-rivals Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex stadium the previous weekend, a section of the away support called for Hodgson and chairman Steve Parish to leave the club.

Hodgson is in his second spell at Palace, having been re-appointed on a short-term contract in March 2023 following the sacking of Patrick Vieira. After steering the club away from the relegation zone, with five wins and three draws from 10 games to finish 11 points above the relegation zone, he signed a one-year deal last summer.

The former England manager previously spent four years in charge of Palace between 2017 and 2021. He signed a short-term deal at Watford in January 2022 but confirmed his departure after their relegation to the Championship was sealed and he said he did not expect to take another managerial job in the Premier League, before returning to lead Palace 10 months later.

Crystal Palace have become dangerously dysfunctional – on and off the field

Hodgson’s career in the dugout has spanned more than 45 years with teams including Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion and Palace, as well as the national sides of Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and Finland.

Glasner, meanwhile, replaced Adi Hutter as Eintracht boss at the start of the 2021-22 season. They finished 11th in the Bundesliga after coming fifth in the previous season, but did win the Europa League after defeating Rangers on penalties in the final.

Last season, the 49-year-old’s side finished seventh in the Bundesliga, qualifying for the Europa Conference League, while they were knocked out of the Champions League by Napoli at the last-16 stage.

Before taking the Eintracht job, Glasner was head coach at Wolfsburg where he finished seventh and fourth in his two seasons, then leaving at the end of the 2020-21 campaign to take charge of their Bundesliga rivals.

His other previous clubs include Austrian sides LASK and SV Reid – having spent his entire playing career with the latter.
