Dolphins Season Ends In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

Cambridge, MA – The greatest season in women’s soccer program history came to an end this past weekend, as the team lost against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The final score, however, was irrelevant to the the end of the season. The 2023 Dolphins will go down as one of the best teams to ever wear a Mount Saint Vincent jersey, and it’s one that will be remembered for years to come.

Despite having the tall task of taking on the 14th ranked team in the nation, CMSV looked like they belonged on Saturday morning. The young Dolphins team went step-for-step with the powerhouse Engineers, even controlling the possession battle for the majority of the first half. The lone goal of the half came at the 30 minute mark when a scrum in front of goalkeeper Javiera Sanchez resulted in MIT getting on the board. Sanchez, meanwhile, did her part in the first 45 minutes of action, making four saves.

Instead of being discouraged, instead the Dolphins regrouped at halftime and made it a game. Freshman midfielder Caitlyn Thompson put the cherry on top of her fantastic first year in Riverdale when she picked up a loose ball off of a turnover and buried her shot attempt into the back left of the goal, tying up the game at one.

From there, MIT turned up the pressure offensively, taking 10 shots while scoring two more to walk away with the win.

The game capped off a 2023 season that will be one to remember. With Stuart Dick returning all members from the championship team, the CMSV women’s soccer program has all the makings of becoming a powerhouse in the Skyline for years to come.
