Duncanville vs. DeSoto headlines list of games postponed

Here are five thoughts from Week 10 of the Texas high school football season. Next week is the final week of the regular season.

Lightning and heavy rain delayed several games throughout the Dallas area Friday, and several were postponed until Saturday. That included Duncanville at DeSoto — the game of the year in Texas.

That matchup of defending state champions and nationally ranked teams will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday at DeSoto. The winner of this battle of unbeatens claims the District 11-6A title, and state No. 1-ranked Duncanville is trying to extend a 22-game winning streak.

The teams waited for more than an hour as torrential rain and lightning bombarded DeSoto’s Eagle Stadium before making a decision to postpone it. There is also rain in the forecast all day Saturday, but it’s only a 34% chance at 2 p.m. in DeSoto, according to Weather.com. That’s the least chance of rain all day.

The Rockwall vs. Mesquite game was postponed until 1 p.m. Saturday at Hanby Stadium. Rockwall can clinch the District 10-6A title with a win.

The Sachse at Wylie game was postponed until 1 p.m. Saturday at Wylie ISD Stadium with Sachse leading 7-0 in the first quarter. Sachse (6-2, 6-0) can clinch the District 9-6A title with a win over Wylie (6-2, 5-1), as it already has a head-to-head win over Wylie East (7-1, 5-1).

Wylie East also had its game against Garland Lakeview postponed until noon Saturday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium. Wylie East could wrap up second place in the district with a win and a Sachse win.

Here are other games postponed until Saturday:

McKinney North at Forney, noon at City Bank Stadium

Lancaster at North Mesquite, noon at Mesquite Memorial

Royse City at Rockwall-Heath, 1 p.m. at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium

Fort Worth Nolan at Bishop Lynch, 2 p.m.

Kimball at Seagoville, 4 p.m.

No teams had clinched a playoff spot in District 6-5A Division I heading into Week 10. After Friday, all four playoff spots have been clinched.

Frisco Lone Star (8-1, 7-0) clinched the top seed in the district by beating Frisco 41-10 on Thursday for its eighth consecutive win as running back Davian Groce and quarterback Collin Blackstock each ran for two touchdowns and Groce accounted for 212 total yards. Frisco (6-3, 5-2) got into the postseason when Frisco Heritage lost 41-0 to Frisco Reedy and Frisco Wakeland beat Sherman 56-24.

Brennan Myer threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns and Ashdyn Kahouch had four catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns in Wakeland’s win.

Heritage (6-3, 4-3) has lost to Frisco and Frisco Wakeland, the two teams that it could finish tied with for third or fourth place. Reedy (9-1, 7-1) and Wakeland (7-2, 5-2) both clinched playoff berths with their wins, and Reedy clinched the No. 2 seed in the district.

Coppell clinched the District 6-6A title with a 51-21 rout of Flower Mound as Edward Griffin threw for 305 yards and six touchdowns and Tucker Cusano and Baron Tipton combined for five touchdown catches. Coppell (8-0, 6-0) has the tiebreaker edge over second-place Lewisville by virtue of a 49-28 head-to-head win.

Coppell doesn’t know yet if it will be in the Division I or Division II playoff bracket. That will depend on if Plano East makes the playoffs.

Plano East (5-4, 3-3) is tied with Hebron (4-4, 3-3) for fourth place going into Week 11. Hebron has the tiebreaker edge after beating Plano East 38-28. Plano East could also finish tied with Flower Mound Marcus (4-5, 4-2), its Week 11 opponent.

The District 8-6A title will be decided in the final week of the regular season when Arlington Bowie plays Arlington Martin next Thursday at Choctaw Stadium. That showdown was made possible by a dramatic win by Bowie on Thursday.

Nate Acheampong kicked a 35-yard field goal with 14 seconds left to give Bowie a 31-29 victory over Arlington Lamar as Bowie (7-2, 5-0) extended its winning streak to six games. Bowie trailed by seven with less than two minutes left, but quarterback Larry Nichols scored on a 39-yard scramble with 1:15 remaining, then after Bowie missed the extra point, Johnnie Macon recovered the ensuing onside kick and Nichols led an eight-play drive that covered 48 yards and ended with the winning field goal.

Meanwhile, Martin (6-3, 5-0) took care of business with a 58-21 win over Arlington. Martin has won six straight after an 0-3 start, and it has averaged 57.5 points during the winning streak.

Midlothian and Red Oak were both winning, but were both in weather delays late Friday night. This week’s games won’t change the fact that their head-to-head matchup next Thursday at Red Oak will decide the District 4-5A Division I title. The loser of that game could have to open the playoffs against three-time state champion Denton Ryan, which has reached at least the state semifinals five times since 2016.

Denton Ryan (6-2, 5-2) will play Justin Northwest (8-1, 6-1) in its regular-season finale next Thursday, with the winner securing the No. 2 seed in 3-5A Division I. Northwest clinched a playoff berth Friday by beating Burleson Centennial 38-20 as Ife Durodoye ran for 263 yards and four touchdowns.
