Europe’s travel strikes: Flight and train disruption you can expect in November

Strikes are a regular occurrence in Europe, as employees withhold their labour to fight for better pay and conditions.

Walkouts are sometimes planned months ahead but others are announced last minute, showing that it always pays to check before you travel.

Luckily, we have gathered all of the strike information together below.

France: SNCF to strike over pay

Workers at SNCF, France’s national state-owned railway company, will go on strike on 8 November over pay.

Some trains have already been cancelled and further disruption is expected to be announced at 5pm on Tuesday 7 November.

Workers represented by the CGT union are demanding a wage increase of around 12 per cent in line with inflation.

UK: London DLR workers go on strike

Workers on London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) will walk out on 7-8 November, with potential disruption continuing into the morning of 9 November.

Passengers have been warned that the DLR, which connects London’s two major financial districts – Canary Wharf and the City of London – will not be running during the two-day RMT strike.

Italy: Public transport strikes in Milan and beyond

Milan will grind to a halt on 10 November due to an ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) public transport strike.

Buses, trams and metro services could be affected by the walk out. It is expected to take place between 8:45am and 3pm, and again from 6pm until the end of the evening – coinciding with busy commuter travel times.

A national strike by workers on Italo high-speed trains on 11 November could also cause disruption for travellers throughout the country.

Spain: Security staff announce airport strike in Alicante

Private security staff at Alicante-Elche airport have announced strikes later this month over working conditions and pay.

Ilunion Seguridad employees will strike on 7, 10-12, 14, 17-19, 21, 24-26 and 28 November; 1-10, 12, 15-17, 19 and 22-31 December; and 1-14 January.

Germany: Possible train strikes spilling over into Christmas

The German Train Drivers’ Union (GDL) have said train strikes are possible in Germany on 9 November and over the Christmas period, most likely to affect long distance trains.

They are in a long running dispute with train operator Deutsche Bahn over pay.

Negotiations are due to reopen on 9 November. Deutsche Bahn have called for a 14-day “peace agreement” over the Christmas period.
