DULUTH — Up to four inches of rain that fell overnight and early Sunday has caused flooding in some areas in Duluth, the near North Shore and in Douglas County, and the National Weather Service issued a flood warning until 7 p.m. Sunday.
The Weather Service reported water over roads, with streams and ditches rising rapidly.
While the Weather Service said the majority of flooding rain had ended by Sunday afternoon, it would take time for flood waters to recede. Officials at about 1 p.m. Sunday reported exactly 4 inches of rain had fallen in the past 48 hours at the NWS station in Duluth.
The city of Duluth issued news releases Sunday noting some areas of concern, including sanitary sewer overflows at 22nd Avenue East, 45th Avenue East, and London Road; reports of flooding near Krenzen Auto and Target; and Chester Creek running high near the Armory. Very high rushing water was reported along Kettle River and other Lake Superior tributaries, the Weather Service noted.

Officials reminded motorists not to drive into flooded areas and everyone to stay away from dislodged manhole covers.
As of Sunday morning, Duluth had received more than 7 inches of rain in September, more than four inches above normal, one of the wettest months in over a year and effectively drenching a summerlong drought.
