France travel warning as Foreign Office updates guidance

The UK Foreign Office has issued new guidance for people travelling to France.

The government department provides advice about risks of travel to any of 226 nations and territories in a bid to help people make informed decisions and stay safe. On Sunday afternoon, December 31, the FCDO issued a new alert to anyone with plans to visit France.

It comes after Eurostar services were disrupted on Saturday, December 30. The travel chaos was sparked by flooding, as millions of gallons of water entered tunnels in London and Kent.

The Foreign Office is urging people to check with Eurostar for the latest updates. The international rail operator told its social media followers stations would be “extremely busy” and that people could request to have their tickets refunded, or to travel on an alternative date.

While a normal service has since resumed, Eurostar has not said it will be able to run any extra trains. Some passengers, whose trains were cancelled on Saturday, were seen queuing at St Pancras to try and book tickets on Sunday.

Many people were left stranded and unable to get to their intended destinations in time for the New Year.
