REDCycle has issued a statement after EPA Victoria found 3000 tonnes of plastic bags at six Melbourne warehouses.

It says it is “fully” supporting the work of the EPA – even though the latter organisation’s chief executive said the recycling company only told it about “some” of the warehouses.

“REDcycle is assisting EPA’s ongoing investigations regarding storage facilities used to store and sort soft plastics,” the statement said.

“We have been and will continue to work closely with and fully support the work of the EPA.

“We continue to keep our partners and our dedicated and loyal REDcycle community updated with our progress.

“Our top priority is working to find solutions to convert this material into a desirable and needed resource for the greater good.”

Earlier, EPA chief executive Lee Miezis said it had to rely on information from other companies to find all the warehouses where 3000 tonnes of plastic were stored.

“We have issued an information gathering notice to (REDCycle), and it did tell us about some of those sites but through our investigations we have heard directly from logistics companies and others, and that has assisted us to identify the full extent of these sites,” he said.

Miezis also said the EPA was concerned about the fire risk from the roughly “half a billion” plastic bags in the warehouses.
