* When the Parkersburg High School Red Wings received training from WVU Medicine Camden Clark’s Emergency Medical Services team last week, the group learned adult, child and infant CPR, AED training and basic first aid. This wasn’t just a matter of watching a few videos and moving on with their day. The Red Wings got hands-on training using practice mannequins, and each earned CPR cards by completing all training components and performing skills individually. Though none of them now knows when such skills might be put to use, they could be the difference between life and death. It is comforting to know Camden Clark’s EMS crew carries out this work.

* For many West Virginians, Joe Mazzulla is a former West Virginia University basketball player first, and then, oh yeah, coach of the NBA’s Boston Celtics. Perhaps that is why Mazzulla was so willing to take part in last week’s Sports in American Culture class at Parkersburg High School. “It’s so cool to see someone who made it from here, and (for him) to talk to someone like me who wants to make it out of here,” PHS junior Nate Rodriguez said. “This is a cool experience.” While it is up to the rest of us to make this region the kind of place our bright young students do not want to “make it out of,” it is nonetheless good to know Mazzulla was able to serve as an inspiration.

* Wood County commissioners made an important move last week when they agreed to an application for a grant that would, if approved, pay for an additional prosecutor who would specifically handle child abuse cases. “They typically take more investigation and more time and effort needs to be put in those,” said Wood County Prosecutor Pat Lefebure. It is good to know efforts are being made to hire a person whose job is to spend that extra time and effort for the children in our community who need it most.
