‘It’s just been fantastic’ – Davy Russell latest celebrity to leave Dancing with the Stars

The former jockey joined his professional partner Kylee Vincent in a Viennese Waltz to Never Tear Us Apart by INXS.

After his dance, Russell said: “I have to thank my wife and all the lads at home, everyone on the farm and the kids. It’s just been fantastic and credit to Kylee.”

Judge Loraine Barry said: “Davy, you have been wonderful from the first show.”

Host Jennifer Zamparelli looked emotional when she admitted Russell had won the hearts of contestants and staff on the show.

“He’s the best boy,” she said, before announcing that the glitterball would be “off to a new home next week,” with the DWTS final expected to be a competitive close to this season.

Russell said after the show: “I’m delighted to have had the opportunity. I’m not disappointed. I was so excited, I wasn’t searching for an adrenaline rush, as I get it with the kids competing, but it’s a fantastic insight into an industry I didn’t even whet my feet in.

“I’m not disappointed, when I go once my last dance is to a standard, my last dance was to a good standard.

“It’s more so commitment, it takes up a lot of time and effort, when I was a a professional jockey I committed to that, I haven’t lived much of a life when I was in the show. I kept things as normal as possible but you have to commit to it.

“I was just my normal self.”

The first celebrity to take to the dancefloor tonight was Wild Youth singer David Whelan and his professional partner Salome Chachua. They danced a Salsa to Wrapped Up by Olly Murs.

But their spooky Mummy inspired performance wasn’t enough to rescue them and the couple wound up in the dance off.

After his performance, Whelan said: “It was scary but I gave it everything… We were laughing and shouting through all of it. You never know in this competition. That’s why people at home need to vote for their favourites.

“I feel I performed better the second time… It means everything to me. I’ve worked harder for this than anything in my life. Dancing has become a love of mine I never thought I’d find.”

The performer’s reaction to being in the dance off highlighted just how much the prize means to some contestants.

And judges praised Whelan for his prowess on the dancefloor.

One of the highlights of the night was when former Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK contestant Blue Hydrangea danced the Charleston with dance partner Simone Arena to Witch Doctor by The Cartoons.

Next week’s final of DWTS will be aired on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player next Sunday at 7pm
