Returning to the Ranji Trophy after a gap of five years, India and Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer spoke about domestic cricket. The 29-year-old emphasised that he played the game against Andhra to get into a rhythm before the upcoming five-match Test series against England, commencing on January 25.

Iyer faced a challenging time in the Test series in South Africa, registering only one double-figure score – 31 at Centurion – in three completed innings. To regain his form ahead of an important home Test series, starting in Hyderabad, he was asked by the selectors and the team management to return to domestic cricket.

Reflecting on the experience, Iyer said: “It was a nice experience. I wasn’t expecting much from myself, to be honest, but I wanted to create a rhythm going forward, focusing on the five-Test series. The intensity will be high. Also, to stand on the field for 90 overs takes a lot of effort, so it all started from here (the match against Andhra Pradesh),” Iyer told JioCinema.

Iyer scored a run-a-ball 48 against Andhra in the only innings he played, as Mumbai won the game by 10 wickets. After the match, he had an extended net session under his coach Pravin Amre’s supervision.

Despite a fallow series against South Africa, Iyer retained his spot for the first two matches against England. The dynamic batter discussed the advantages and disadvantages of playing Test cricket, emphasising the need to focus on one match at a time and handle pressure situations effectively.

“You have to take one match at a time and not think too much ahead. You have to take all the factors into consideration. In terms of your mental ability, the stress is going to be a lot but at the same time, you have to handle the pressure situations well. So, these are the pros and cons of playing Tests,” he said.

The game against Andhra went well. England will present a tougher challenge. Also, this will be Iyer’s first five-match Test series.
